Asda’s unbeatable Easter egg
A SUPERMARKET Easter egg has beaten the best that luxury and chocolate specialists have to offer.
Asda’s ‘ The Collection’ Giant Belgian Chocolate Egg, which weighs in at 1kg, is ‘thick, rich and delicious’, according to experts in an annual taste test.
Costing £10, it scored higher than Fortnum & Masons Eggsploding Egg – which was £25 at the time of testing but is now £37.50 – and the £26 Eggsibitionist from Hotel Chocolat.
This suggests that people need not break the bank when it comes to keeping loved ones happy with their Easter Sunday treat.
Experts at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested more than 190 chocolate eggs ranging in price from £1.99 to £26 to find the best options in four categories.
And then they decided which egg was worthy of being named overall winner. The Asda egg, which was said to be a perfect size for sharing and credited for its smooth finish, was awarded 79 points out of 100.
Good value eggs from rival stores, such as Tesco and Marks & Spencer, also scored well despite relatively modest prices.
Good Housekeeping consumer editor Caroline Bloor said: ‘The variety of Easter eggs available is fantastic but spending more does not guarantee good value or great taste.
‘We think the Asda egg is a deserving winner, proving that a cheaper egg can not only taste delicious but is excellent overall value.’
The ‘made for sharing’ category was won by last year’s overall winner, Tesco’s 660g Finest Ultimate Belgian Milk Chocolate Egg.
Marks & Spencer came top in the ‘best for grown-ups’ category with its 350g Luxury Egg Nest.
In the children’s categories, ‘best for girls’ was the Nestle Milkybar Milkybarn. And, finally, the ‘best for boys’ winner was named as the Chokablok Billionaires Dynamite Egg, which is sold by Tesco.
