Fraser kicks Dulwich to HQ victory

- LUKE BENEDICT

DULWICH COLLEGE are ‘back on the map’ after winning the Daily Mail RBS Under 18 Cup thanks to the boot of Dominic Fraser and the brawn of their pack. The inside centre kicked five from five to score all Dulwich’s points in a 15-8 victory over Old Swinford Hospital. En route to Twickenham he took a couple of tips off his brother, Saracens flanker Will Fraser, who narrowly lost to Harlequins at Wembley on Saturday in front of a world-record crowd. ‘He said, “Try not to cry in front of that many people like I did!”,’ said Dulwich’s modest matchwinner. ‘For the first couple of kicks I was pretty nervy but I hit them sweet and then the crowd get behind you and it gives you a big lift.’ The victory is another tick on the impressive coaching c.v. of Sam Howard, a former Dulwich first XV captain, who was determined to put an end to the school’s fallow years in this competition. ‘As a lot of people keep saying, it’s nice to have Dulwich rugby back on the map, which undoubtedly these boys have done in winning this and St Jo’s Festival,’ he said, before welcoming the sense of deja vu in watching Fraser land his quintet of kicks. ‘Our goal-kicker was magnificent, kicking five from five at Twickenham and he’s been doing it all year,’ Howard added. ‘He won us the game at Hampton with five from five. ‘We’re not the biggest pack but we know we don’t get bullied. We’ve done a hell of a lot of work over the last two months and we knew we’d be fitter than them.’ The OSH hooker Fred Brookes scored the game’s only try in the first half but was shown the game’s only yellow card in the second. Openside Dominic Wroe Wright, who launches himself at the shins of opponents with complete disregard for his physical well-being, was the stand-out tackler for Dulwich. And Fraser didn’t need his brother’s advice after all.
