Not everyone’s cup of tea

£250 for a Jubilee teapot... or £395 for a cake stand!

- By Rebecca English Royal Correspondent

EVEN the most ardent royalist would surely think twice before shelling out for one of these souvenir cake stands released to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

For each one requires a hefty investment of £395.

They are part of an official collection approved by the Queen herself.

Other souvenirs include a £495 ornamental urn made from fine bone china and gilded with the Royal Coat of Arms in 22-carat gold. Buyers are warned that the

urns are not dishwasher proof or suitable for use in microwave ovens.

And you can even buy a £15.95 box of chocolates shaped like crowns.

The official Diamond Jubilee range will be sold online and in royal residences including Buckingham Palace.

The proceeds will be used for the upkeep of the Royal Collection, a treasure trove of paintings, furniture and antiques collected by monarchs over 500 years and held in trust by the sovereign on behalf of the nation.

Officials stress that the Queen approves the collection as a whole, rather than each individual item – but it is known that little escapes her eagle eye.

Despite the price tags, some items among the 26-strong range are selling well. A £250 teapot is already sold out, as is a £12.95 Royal Mint commemorative coin. But for those with cash to spare, there is still a £450 musical box which plays God Save The Queen when opened.

And at the lower end of the scale – relatively speaking – there is a £25 coffee mug painted with 22carat gold and a £5.95 mint tin. n The Queen will take part in a glittering procession through the streets of London to mark her Jubilee.

She will be joined by the Duke of Edinburgh and other senior royals including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Tuesday, June 5, Buckingham Palace announced yesterday. Ten thousand free tickets to watch from a seated area opposite the Palace will be given away in a public ballot.

Details of how to apply for the draw, which closes on April 20, can be found at www.jubilee5june.co.uk.
