SHOW SOME DIGNITY, RVP
From Back Page with his fellow Dutch international Ibrahim Alfellay, the 26-year-old Barca midfield star. Van Persie, meanwhile, found himself accused by Wigan skipper Gary Caldwell of showing a lack of dignity for refusing to shake his hand after Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat on Monday night. The pair were involved in a confrontation in the closing stages (right) and Van Persie appeared to snub Caldwell’s offer of a handshake after the final whistle, much to the Scotland defender’s annoyance. ‘I felt it was unnecessary. To be at a great club like Arsenal you have to be a bad loser,’ said Caldwell. ‘But I think you also have to have a bit of dignity at the end. When we got beaten 4-0 at the DW Stadium, I shook everybody’s hand and I expect the same back. ‘I went to shake his hand and he threw me away which is disappointing. It was all much about nothing. You lose games and you’re bitterly disappointed and you show that in a number of different ways. But he is a fantastic player — I actually voted him for player of the year and I’m sure he will win that.’ Arsenal midfield star Jack Wilshere will sacrifice his London 2012 dream to ensure he is fit for the start of Arsenal’s new season. Boss Arsene Wenger confirmed on Monday night that the England midfielder would miss the rest of the season and Euro 2012 due to a succession of foot problems. And the England international will also be unavailable for the Olympic Games. Team GB boss Stuart Pearce had been keen on selecting Wilshere, who had previously shown a willingness to play at London 2012. But Wilshere will reject any approach from Pearce after agreeing with Wenger not to play in the tournament. Wilshere will concentrate on conditioning himself for the start of pre-season training in early July. The stress fractures in his right ankle and heel have healed but Wilshere and Arsenal’s medical team agree it is in his best interests not to rush back.
