Elton’s mini-me

Lookalike son Zachary even plays the piano

IF Sir Elton John ever thinks of forming a double act, here’s the perfect partner. His 18- month- old son Zachary stole the show in a rare public appearance with his father for a TV interview yesterday.

Given a pair of glasses he’d have been a dead ringer for the singer – although whether it was Sir Elton or his partner David Furnish who fathered Zachary with a surrogate mother remains a mystery. Speaking at his home in the south of France, the star told Helen Fospero of ITV1’s Daybreak that life is just perfect since he became a father.

Sir Elton, 65, said: ‘I regret a little bit that I didn’t do it sooner, but he has changed our lives. Everything is about him now.

‘He’s gorgeous, he travels brilliantly, he so loves people, and it makes our lives.’

He said he suspected Zachary would follow him into music. ‘He loves the piano, he sits down and plays it – he doesn’t just bang it, he plays it like I play it.

‘ He’s never seen a show, he’s too young, but he comes out when the stadium is empty and sits down on the piano stool with me and he plays and looks into the microphone.’

Earlier this week the singer admitted he was worried about the impact of their unusual family set-up on his son, saying: ‘It’s going to be heartbreaking for him to grow up and realise he hasn’t got a mummy. But he’s so happy. I’ve never seen a more contented child.’

In yesterday’s interview he reaffirmed that Zachary would one day have a sibling. ‘ We definitely will have another. At what stage we don’t know, but we definitely will. I don’t want him to be an only child,’ he added.
