Giants ‘must stand up’ after loss

- NEIL BARRACLOUGH

NEW Huddersfield coach Paul Anderson urged his team to stick together as he bids to rebuild their shattered confidence following an eighth defeat in nine league games. Giants led 14-6 with less than half an hour remaining, only to produce a spectacular implosion that saw them concede 29 points in the final 28 minutes. Anderson, who took over following Nathan Brown’s sacking on Monday, said: ‘We’ve got to keep turning up for each other. That’s the sign of a good team. We showed promise, but we were like a pair of windscreen wipers: we just went side to side.’ Luke George’s brace sandwiched Ben Cockayne’s effort as Huddersfield built up a first-half advantage, only for the Wildcats to strike with five tries after the break. Dean Collis, Lee Smith, Richard Mathers, Tim Smith and Danny Kirmond all crossed in a one-sided period. Wakefield boss Richard Agar said: ‘Our spirit is really good. We’ve found a style that suits us. We might only have seven wins on the board, but for the bulk of the season we’ve challenged teams.’ Kevin Brown, the man Anderson stripped of the Huddersfield captaincy early last week, is unlikely to play again for the Giants. ‘He had ankle surgery on Thursday. He’s probably gone for the year,’ Anderson said. WARRINGTON survived a Castleford comeback to claim a 40-26 win and maintain the pressure on league leaders Wigan. Trailing 34-0 in the 53rd minute, Cas scored 26 unanswered points, but the Wolves survived and sealed the win with a late Stefan Ratchford try.
