Ice skating champion Jayne Torvill, 54, answers our health quiz

- INTERVIEW by SARAH EWING

HOW FIT ARE YOU NOW YOU NO LONGER COMPETE? WHEN I stopped in 1998 it was hard to have the same motivation to exercise. I put on two stone — going up to 10st — and increased to a size 14, which wasn’t healthy for my small 5ft 1in frame. It wasn’t until I knew I was going to be on TV regularly on Dancing On Ice in 2006 that I got the kickstart I needed. HOW DID YOU LOSE WEIGHT? I DID the Hay Diet, where you don’t mix proteins with carbohydrates, and I lost a stone and a half without even exercising. The principle is that by eating starches and proteins separately you put less strain on the digestive system. I’ve kept it up, but I’m not as strict any more. I’m now around 7st 7lb. I’ve toned up, too, since I started using a personal trainer three times a week. And, yes, I still skate.

POP ANY PILLS? YES, seven a day, including a multivitamin and rosehip and glucosamine to keep my joints supple.

BIGGEST WEAKNESS? SOMETIMES if I’m hungry and I haven’t got time to eat something sensible, I’ll grab some crisps like Kettle Chips because they’re not as salty. Cream used to be a weakness and I like wine. WOULD YOU HAVE PLASTIC SURGERY? I’VE no desire to go under the knife. I think you have to be very cautious. When it’s obvious someone has had something done, it doesn’t look great. HOW’S YOUR PAIN THRESHOLD? GIVEN what I put my body through when I was skating professionally, I think it’s probably higher than most people’s. But my skating partner Chris Dean’s is incredibly high. WHAT WAS YOUR WORST INJURY? WHEN I was competing in 1983, we took a fall and I fractured my shoulder blade. It took more than a year to recover and I had intensive physio every day. I had to be heavily strapped up when I competed a few months later.

ANY FAMILY AILMENTS? NO. Both my parents are in their 80s. Years ago my father-in-law had colon cancer and had to have surgery.

SLEEP WELL? I SLEEP pretty soundly, and I’ll have ten hours if I can, although that isn’t often when you have kids (I’ve got two, Kieran, ten, and Jessica, six).

ANY PHOBIAS? BATS! We live in the Sussex countryside and there are bats everywhere. At certain times of the year, I have to keep all the windows closed. LIKE TO LIVE FOR EVER? DEFINITELY. When I was little, I said I want to live to 100 and I still do. JAYNE TORVILL supports Team Give Blood, a campaign to boost blood stocks by 30 per cent. See blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.
