Put Britain first

-

recenTlY, i had to travel on business from where i live in a relatively prosperous part of the country to an area that has suffered terribly in the recession. The difference between the two areas was staggering.

i was shocked by the run-down state of a once-thriving industrial area — boarded up shops, decrepit property, unrepaired roads, rubbish, with old people tottering about in rags with filthy dogs, worn- out young mums pushing prams with children who will no doubt never know anything else but such a life of desperation.

i thought of David cameron, giving away millions in overseas aid from our taxes. Does he not stop to think what life is like for thousands of people with no hope right on his doorstep? The taxes we pay should be ploughed back to alleviate poverty in Britain.

returning home, i felt guilty that i live in a home with a beautiful garden we’ve built up over the years in a lovely spot. But now we are in danger of losing our home because we can hardly afford to pay the fuel bills.

Mr cameron might like to join me on a walkabout, when i’d be pleased to show him where the money spent on foreign aid should be spent closer to home here in Britain. DENNIS mIDDlETON,

Bamford, Derbys.
