INSPIRATIONAL MOVIE
The Chorus, 12.10pm, Sky Indie
THE ‘inspirational teacher’ drama is given a musical twist in this cockle-warming Gallic drama that was nominated for two Oscars. Gerard Jugnot is the music tutor who brings a little magic to a dour boys’ school.
FACT FROM FICTION History Detectives, 6.35pm, PBS America
THE tenth season of this cosy investigative series begins, and with the potential discovery of the guitar on which Dylan ‘went electric’. It’s the detective story to confirm that one way or the other that makes it interesting.
TOP DRAMA PILOT
House, 7pm, Sky Atlantic
WATCHING the pilot, you can see why this medical take on the Sherlock Holmes template lasted eight years. It’s clear and confident, never talks down to the viewer, and Hugh Laurie (pictured) is superb in the lead as Dr. Gregory House, whose combination of fierce intelligence and foul manners is strangely moreish.
RUGBY UNION Gloucester v Bordeaux-Begles, 7pm, Sky Sports 1
THE second round of fixtures in the European Challenge Cup gets under way tonight with this Pool One clash at Kingsholm.
MATHS & MYTHS The Science Of Chance, 9pm, BBC4
THERE’S something about maths documentaries that makes filmmakers try harder — they know the subject matter is tricky. A host that reminds you of a quirky uncle is a good starting point, and Professor David Spiegelhalter brings great interest to this debunking of the myths of chance in terms of gambling, life expectancy and more.
CULT COMEDY
Red Dwarf X, 9pm, Dave
THE new series continues in the show’s best tradition, with a nicely tied-together script that lands the crew back in ancient Britain. This episode has the certainty of character that makes the jokes really work, although the smug dig at Christianity in the latter half is unnecessary and painfully predictable.
HISTORY SERIES CONCLUDES
The British, 9pm, Sky Atlantic
THIS lavish history series, which Sky is giving away to schools, concludes with the rise of women in the 20th century. The most eyecatching story is that of Amy Johnson (pictured), the secretary from Hull who flew from Britain to Australia, but there is also insight into less glamorous lives. The section on women who worked in World War I munitions factories is particularly hair-raising.
FILM COMEDY
My Cousin Vinny, 9pm, TCM
JONATHAN LYNN’S fast-talking courtroom caper, with Joe Pesci as the lawyer who thinks he’s a big fish in a little pond – but isn’t. Pesci is on form, but Marisa Tomei really steals the show.
PAY-PER-VIEW MOVIE Electrick Children, Virgin Movies
U.S. INDIE about a Mormon girl (Julia Garner) who hears rock music for the first time, and claims it has made her pregnant through immaculate conception. Running away to Las Vegas, she falls in with a seamy rocker crowd. With so much naivety to buy into, this could have been irksome, but it has enough charm to stay afloat.
