Should Mitchell resign over ‘Plebgate’?

-

THe time has come for Mr Cameron to jump off the fence and ask Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell to resign — and if he refuses, sack him. This man is supposed to be in charge of discipline within the Tory party, but he has shown a complete lack of personal discipline. nobody in his own constituency apparently believes him, and it’s also apparent the police who have dealt with this also feel the same way. If a member of the public had spoken to a police officer the way Mr Mitchell allegedly did, they’d have had their collar felt.

MARK BRIMBLE, Newport, Mons. WHAT does the incident tell us about the commitment of No 10 to its green agenda, when discriminatory action against a cyclist has been passed over without comment? Shouldn’t any cyclist having legitimate business at No 10 have his commendable mode of travel recognised and saluted by those in charge of the main gate? It seems an odd way of promoting cycling to oblige Mr Mitchell to dismount and use the side gate as if he is inconveniencing the police.

WILFRED ATTENBOROUGH, Lincoln. WHy was Mr Mitchell refused exit through the main downing Street gates? Was this a security measure? If so why had he been permitted to ride through those gates before? as the story develops, one cannot help but conclude this is a silly spat between a foolish politician and politically-motivated police. Two people had a bad day. It happens, get over it.

MICHAEL WILLIAMS, Birmingham. AS ANDREW Mitchell is still disputing what he actually said to the police, should the evidence not be tested in a magistrates’ court?

COLIN MacDONALD, Bottesford, Notts. aCCORdInG to the Highway Code: ‘you must not cycle on a footway or footpath unless on a cycle track where one has been provided.’ yet the police instructed Mr Mitchell to use the footpath and pedestrian entrance. Has this law been altered?

D. GERMAN, Belfast.
