WHO IS YOUR SPORTING HERO?
As a kid growing up it had to be Cassius Clay, latterly Muhammad Ali. He was so different. In the beginning everyone wanted him to lose because he came out with ridiculous predictions. In the end he proved to be exactly everything he said he was. He was such a unique individual at that time.
IF YOU WERE NOT A SPORTSMAN, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
From a very early age, 10-11, I knew I was going to be a professional footballer. There was never one ounce of doubt.
CAREER HIGHLIGHT?
I’ve been so privileged, I won 13 major trophies as a player and 11 as a manager. Some players go through their careers and win next to nothing. If I had to pick I suppose I’d have to say the last one. Winning the European Cup, for Liverpool, being captain, against Roma in Rome. No-one gave us a chance and the last ball I kicked was scoring in a penalty shoot-out, so it doesn’t get much better than that. Winning the European Cup on May 27, 1981, against Real Madrid in Paris, that was on a Wednesday night and on the Friday my first son Fraser was born, that was special, too. So between those.
AND THE WORST MOMENT?
When you start off in football the one thing that’s guaranteed is that there are disappointments. It’s how your react to the disappointments that end up making you whatever character you become, a bit like in life. But the setbacks I had don’t register in my mind. I don’t know what that says about me. I’ve been very lucky.
IF YOUR HOUSE WAS BURNING DOWN AND YOUR FAMILY SAFE, WHAT ITEM WOULD YOU SAVE?
My dog is safe, too? Then my golf clubs. I’ve only played golf for three years. I love it now.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG?
Marvin Gaye, Sexual Healing. I’m showing my age. Why that one? You don’t want to know, you couldn’t print it. It was in the days of the Walkman. That’s all I’m telling you.
LAST FILM YOU SAW?
The Campaign. I’ve watched it at least six times with my 14-year-old son. I’m a massive Will Ferrell (above) fan.
IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH THREE FAMOUS PEOPLE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?
The Queen, the Queen and the Queen. She’s beyond famous. She’s the most special person that is on this planet. When you look back in history, the way she’s been our Queen I just think she’s a unique person.
CAN YOU COOK?
No, but I can sew. When I left home at 15 I lived in digs. I was always fed but whenever I bought any clothes, like trousers, I had to alter them myself.

Marty Feldman (above). People probably won’t remember him. He’s got one eye facing one way and one the other.
