Coleen’s agony as Rooney and England crash

Bogeyman Suarez leaves our hopes on a knife edge

ENGLAND’S World Cup dreams were left in tatters by a familiar villain last night, after they were beaten 2-1 by Uruguay in their group match in Sao Paulo.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who has suffered two lengthy bans in the Premier League, scored both goals as Uruguay almost certainly ended England’s interest in the competition.

Suarez has proved a controversial figure in England, receiving a long ban for racist abuse and, on another occasion, for biting an opponent. Now he is sure to be Public Enemy No 1 again after breaking English hearts. After the game, the Uruguay star said: 'I dreamt this. I'm enjoying this moment, because of all I suffered, the criticism I received. So, there you go'.

England manager Roy Hodgson praised Suarez, saying: 'He had two chances and as a top player he took those chances and ended our. We're more than diappointed. We're devastated. We fully believed we could do enough to get a result in this game. I don't know what to say at this moment in time.'

The fact it was Suarez who sealed England's defeat was greeeted with derision by some England fans on Twitter. Labour MP Ian Austin said:' Of all the people, it had to be the dirty, cheating violent racist cheat Suarez.'

TV presenter Philip Schofield tweeted: ' Well, I'm having a bloody drink!!! Damn damn damn and damn again.'

Lord Sugar asked: 'Will Suarez be welcomed back by the English fans to UK at the start of the PL season?'

Even pop star Rihanna chimed in with some advice for England's defenders, tweeting: 'Man, they know better than to give Suarez that much room!'

Her criticism was echoed by former England striker Gary Lineker, who said: 'Our defending is appalling!'

Having gone behind to a Suarez header in the 39th minute, hopes of a comeback were raised when under-fire striker Wayne Rooney slotted home with 15 minutes to go. But Suarez had the final say in the 84th minute.

The Three Lions knew they needed a win to give themselves any realistic chance of qualifying for the later stages of the competition, but instead it was a familiar tale of woe for 10,000 England fans in the stadium and the 24million watching in living rooms and pubs as the country came to a standstill.

Among those in the stands was Wayne Rooney's wife Coleen along with sons Kai, four, 13-month-old Klay, and her parents Tony and Colette. However, it seemed even the prospect of watching his dad play in the World Cup was not enough to keep Kai’s attention for long.

Wearing a white England shirt that read ‘Daddy’, the youngster was soon distracted, listening to music on big silver headphones.

Coleen tried to keep her son’s eyes on the game, but he was soon distracted again – snapping photos of his little brother and taking a mandatory selfie. Moments after the game, Coleen tweeted: ‘Gutted with the score, but so pleased @WayneRooney scored and his boys were here to see it!!’
