It’s blackmail for scottish nationalis­ts to say that if they win independen­ce and are refused to be allowed to keep currency union, they won’t pay their share of UK debt.

the fact is that a currency union must not happen because it would make the people of England, Wales and Northern Ireland liable for any future disasters in the scottish economy.

If an independen­t scottish government ran into trouble, Edinburgh would, indeed, be the Athens of the north — not because of its architectu­ral jewels but because it would need bankruptcy-inducing Greek-style bond yields to attract lenders.
