Hold on to your seat … it’s the 4D cinema

- By Simon Cable

YOU may just be getting to grips with the concept of 3D films.

But it seems that technology is already outdated, as cinemas prepare to unveil yet another dimension.

Cineworld is opening the first 4DX theatre, which features water sprays, gusts of air, fog and strobe lighting inside the auditorium to simulate the weather and scenes on screen.

The new multiplex in Milton Keynes will feature seats which shake and rock back and forth, all synchronised with the film’s action.

They are also equipped with a ‘tickler’ – a small brush which swipes the back of viewers’ legs.

Different scents, representing everything from explosives to coffee, will be pumped into the theatre to add to the immersive experience.

The 140-seat cinema, designed by South Korean company CJ 4DPlex, will feature a 19ft x 34ft screen – bigger than a double decker bus.

It is set to open on January 30, with adult tickets starting at £13.40.

The world’s first 4DX cinema was launched in 2009 in Seoul, South Korea, and since then around 150 more have opened in 30 countries including the US and China.

While most cinema-goers have been impressed by the technology, some have reported motion sickness – and many were left damp after the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film.
