Cyclist stood up to litterbug but now he could face assault charges!

- Daily Mail Reporter

SEEING a dropped Pepsi cup in the road, a cyclist decided to shame the motorist who left it there.

So he followed the litterbug – and threw the rubbish back through his car’s open window.

But the public- spirited move turned violent when the enraged driver got out and challenged the cyclist to a fight.

And to make things worse police now say the cyclist could be charged with common assault for instigating a brawl. The 20-year-old filmed the showdown after spotting the ‘recently dropped’ litter next to a black Vauxhall Corsa parked at the side of the road.

Assuming the cup had come from the vehicle, he decided to go after the driver.

The cyclist, who has asked not to be named, said: ‘I just thought for some reason in my head I should be confronting this person.

‘I wasn’t intending it in a very aggressive way.’

He then pedalled after the Vaux- hall, which had driven off, catching up with it at a set of traffic lights.

The cyclist said: ‘As I approached the driver I asked him to roll down the window and this was when I threw the cup in.’

In footage of the incident posted online, he says, ‘here’s your stupid litter back,’ before hurling it inside. But the incident in Dunbarton, near Glasgow, turns nasty when the motorist leaps out of his car and storms over while unleashing a torrent of abuse.

In an expletive-laden rant, the hot-headed driver – wearing a white cap and T- shirt – says: ‘What do you think you’re doing, do you think you’re smart or something? Get off the bike.’

Eventually the motorist returned to his car and drove off – but only after rolling down his window a second time to hurl more abuse and challenge the cyclist to a fight.

The cyclist said: ‘I do feel this guy needs to be named and shamed.’

But when he later phoned police he was told that he could be charged with common assault for instigating a fight by throwing the cup. Officers said no charges would be brought against the driver for threatening behaviour.
