There’s no business like shoe business!

-

THE world of fashion design can be a tough industry to get started in.

Those with the best chance are those who combine creativity with business know-how.

Niki Jessup, a fashion footwear masters student at London College of Fashion, says: ‘I’m confident about my ability as a shoe designer, but without the business skills I’ve developed throughout my MA, my products wouldn’t be a success.’

She recommends people considering a fashion design career to choose courses that include business modules.

‘People entering the industry don’t always have the skills required to make business a success. Teaming creativity, technical skills and business acumen is the secret to success in design.’

British Fashion Council chief executive Caroline Rush says: ‘People looking to enter the industry should ensure they have business skills as well as technical skills.

‘Whether you are working in-house as part of a creative team, or a startup designer, business knowledge and professional advice will increase your chances of success.’

Jalil Rahman, director of luxury footwear brand Augustus Pili, who got support from KPMG Enterprise to help him develop financial and accounting practices, says: ‘ On launching my brand I learnt that creativity alone would not pay my bills, so I’d recommend getting external advice for creative business.’

Start by choosing a fashion course that includes business modules and offers practical experience in the sector, so that you can network within the industry to help you find jobs.

Creative Skillset, the skills council that covers the fashion industry, includes a list of accredited design courses that have the closest links with the industry.

See creativeskillsset.org. The website also offers information about a range of roles in the industry as well as fashion and textile apprenticeships.
