IT’S ROBSON’S CHOICE

- By MIKE DICKSON

LAURA ROBSON is faced with the choice over the coming days of whether to make her comeback on the European clay or to wait at least until the grass court season gets under way next month. While the former British No 1 has not publicly commented on her plans, it is believed she has looked closely at trying to enter the WTA Tour event in Strasbourg in the week before the French Open. With only two weeks to go before that relatively low-key tournament starts she has little time left to make the decision, should she wish to end what will have been a 16-month absence from the circuit with wrist problems. Robson’s name is on the French entry list, although that is purely a signal of intent and does not mean she is obliged to play at Roland Garros, where she can make the main draw through a privileged ranking given to long-term injured players. Strasbourg may serve as a way of getting the first tournament out of the way, but it could be that she will wait for the start of this summer’s elongated grass court season on June 1. There is a new £33,000 tournament being held at Eastbourne during the second week of Roland Garros, part of a four-week run-in to Wimbledon. It might also provide an opportunity for a relaxed re-entry, as the attention of the tennis world would be on Paris. Meanwhile, Andy Murray suffered a frustrating day in Munich as bad weather washed out the quarterfinals of the BMW Open, in which he faces Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic. Murray’s match will now be played this morning, with the semi-finals following in the afternoon, meaning he will have to play three times in two days to win the event — and he also has a doubles match to fit in. He then heads to Madrid for next week’s Masterslevel tournament.
