SPAIN GP HOLDS NO FEAR FOR ALONSO

- JONATHAN McEVOY reports from Barcelona

FERNANDO ALONSO says he has no fears about returning to the scene of his mysterious testing accident in Barcelona.

The double world champion smashed his McLaren and suffered concussion in February, though the cause of the crash remains unexplained.

But speaking ahead of Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix, Alonso said: ‘I have no concerns. It was an accident that happened three months ago and unfortunately it took me a bit longer than expected to recover. But I am coming back here full of confidence and with full motivation to deliver a good result in front of my home crowd.

‘In hospital, I had the best staff I could imagine. They were so kind to me, and I’ll have dinner with them on Sunday night after the stress and the race have passed.’

Alonso (right) is now contending with a stye, which caused him to wear sunglasses throughout his media engagements at the Circuit de Catalunya to protect him from artificial lighting.

A bigger concern for Alonso is McLaren’s woeful form. They have not scored a point all season, but they have brought upgrades with them to the first grand prix of the European season.

‘This weekend is important, not so much in terms of the result or points, but to see if our updates are consistent and deliver what we expect from the car,’ said Alonso.

‘In China and Bahrain everything we brought to the car delivered as expected. We still have high hopes that things will change quickly and we will start performing a little better. I’m enjoying the challenge a lot.

‘We started at the very bottom and we are climbing the mountain. We are doing it a bit faster than everyone expected. This is thanks to all the work all the team are doing. I am proud to be here.’
