Whingeing Aussie crashes out after on-court tantrum

-

TENNIS bad boy Nick Kyrgios crashed out of Wimbledon after putting on a bizarre performance in front of his noisy supporters yesterday.

The 20- year- old Australian appeared to give up part way through the second set against Frenchman Richard Gasquet, deliberately hitting one ball into the net and then not even attempting to return two serves.

His tantrum came after he was given a ticking- off for swearing and then rowed with British umpire James Keothavong over changing his socks on court.

It follows outbursts in previous matches, including swearing and sending his racquet flying into a stand. He now risks a fine of up to £160,000 which would wipe out his £127,000 Wimbledon earnings.

Kyrgios, who wears a gold chain and earring, has divided opinion with his on- court theatrics. He constantly mutters, makes wild gestures and interacts with spectators and ball boys – one of whom he hugged yesterday.

He was booed by hundreds of fans who felt short-changed by his lack of effort yesterday, with BBC host Sue Barker saying: ‘I have never seen anything like it’. He eventually lost 7-5 6-1 6-7 (7/9) 7-6 (8/6).

His exit may calm down the rowdy band of 30 Australian fans who have been annoying spectators and TV viewers alike by chanting and singing between points.

The Fanatics, as they are known, wear yellow and green T-shirts and have travelled to England to support their countrymen. They plan to stay here for the Ashes, which start tomorrow, and the rugby world cup in the autumn.
