SEDUCTIVEL­Y wobbly and utterly scrumptiou­s, there’s nothing nicer than a plateful of old-fashioned jelly.

And now the retro treat has had a posh makeover, with new flavours including damson puree and pink lemonade, and summer cup, M&s’s own-brand version of pimm’s.

‘Jellies aren’t just for children anymore,’ says James campbell, desserts developer at M&s. ‘There’s a trend towards more innovative flavours, so we’ve given them a revamp and developed some grownup options.’

waitrose is going big on jelly, too. Melissa spiro, the store’s dessert buyer, says: ‘Jelly is a favourite with our customers, and this year we’ve added two with a twist — cherry and elderflowe­r. They’re low in fat, but full of flavour, so make the perfect summer treat.’

And if packed with fresh fruit and topped with a thin fruit sauce, jelly terrines make delicious puds at a dinner party, when no one wants to feel they’ve overdone it.

here are some of the nicest new jellies available in the shops . . . Refreshing raspberry jelly terrine

£2.49 for 600g, Waitrose if you’ve got friends for dinner and you’ve made something heavy as a main course, this sliceable terrine would be perfect for pudding. it looks very pretty, too. Summer cup jelly

£3.50 for 570g, M&S if you’re a fan of pimm’s, you’ll enjoy this refreshing jelly terrine made with strawberri­es, cucumber and mint. There’s no alcohol in it — it just tastes like the classic summer drink. it comes with an apple and mint dressing to pour over it. different — and rather fun. Raspberry panna cotta terrine £5 for 585g, Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference in This classic italian pud, raspberry juice jelly is studded with ripe heritage raspberrie­s, over a panna cotta made from double cream infused with Madagascan vanilla. £1.20 for 175g, Waitrose This individual pot is filled with classic summer fruits. The good news is that it has fewer than 100 calories, making it the perfect sweet treat after lunch. Chosen By You mandarin jelly terrine

£2 for 480g, Asda A STRAIGHTFO­RWARD orange jelly terrine with mandarin pieces. This is a cheap and cheerful pud that would be good served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Damson lemonade jelly cubes

£1.35 for 175g, M&S This is so modern it took me a while to get my head around it. inside the pot are cubes of ready-made pink lemonade jelly, with a mixture of damson puree and cloudy lemonade poured over the top. A fun, light lunchtime pud. Cherry jelly

£1.20 for 175g, Waitrose A deep red jelly packed full of cherries, this is simple, straightfo­rward and well-flavoured.
