Cameron: I’ll shut porn sites with no age checks

- From John Stevens in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

PORNOGRAPHY websites will be forced to introduce age checks or face being shut down, David Cameron has said.

The Prime Minister warned of action if the under-18s are not blocked from viewing adult content.

He has ordered a review of plans to create an independent regulator with the power to make internet giants block sites with no proper age restrictions. Those that fail to comply could be fined.

Adult sites could ask visitors to provide bank details or their credit card to verify their identity. Minis- ters want ‘rules that apply offline to apply online’ to ensure that children cannot access pornography online in the same way they cannot buy adult DVDs or magazines without proof of age.

Mr Cameron, who is understood to be ‘frustrated’ that firms have not done more to introduce measures voluntarily, said during a visit to the Far East: ‘I want to see age restrictions put into place or these websites will face being shut down.’
