70s pop idol Cassidy auctions £2m home to help pay debts
WITH a reported £6.5million of debt, David Cassidy is having to make some drastic changes to his superstar lifestyle. But surely none can be larger than having to sell his £2million Florida home.
The Seventies pop heart-throb – now 65 – was ordered by a US court to auction off the waterfront property to help pay his creditors. But he also has a costly divorce to fund.
Bankruptcy papers lodged earlier this year showed the star’s debts include owing £25,000 on credit cards and £85,000 in legal and medical fees.
The one-time teen idol has fought a high-profile battle with alcoholism and is midway through a divorce from third wife Sue Shifrin. He now lives with girlfriend Maura Rossi, an interior designer.
‘My soon-to-be ex-wife and I need to resolve our financial problems,’ he said as he gave a camera crew a tour of the five bedroom home, which also features a swimming pool, gym and library.
It is being sold next month by the Fisher Auction Company with all of its furnishings, including its striking artwork.
Cassidy has suffered several years of personal problems. He publicly admitted he was battling alcoholism in 2008 and has been arrested for drink-driving three times since 2010.
Despite looking for a smaller house, the singer says he has no plans to retire. He still plays his old hits when he tours, but he says this has become more difficult because of arthritis.
