Here comes a 2-day heatwave

- By Mario Ledwith

IF you opened the curtains to glorious sunshine this morning, be sure to make the most of it.

For while parts of the country will be as hot as southern Spain this weekend, wind and rain are set to return on Monday.

Temperatures plummeted this week as a low pressure system dragged an area of cold Arctic air across the Uk.

But there will be a brief respite from the unseasonable chill as a mini-heatwave sends the mercury soaring.

Temperatures are set to peak at up to 24C (75F) in London on Saturday, while the rest of the country will reach the late teens and early twenties. Parts of Wales and northern England will experience periods of light rain but most of Britain will remain dry for the day.

The balmy conditions are expected to continue on Sunday, with temperatures in the capital matching those in Ibiza. However a system of warm air moving in from the south next week will see the return of the topsy-turvy weather as it brings strong wind and showers.

Met Office forecaster Laura Young said: ‘There is another low pressure system edging in on Saturday.

‘For most parts of the country it is looking like we will have a really nice, dry day.’ She added that by the start of next week most areas will have returned to ‘autumnal’ conditions. ‘While the new low pressure system coming in is dragging warm air from the south, it is also bringing with it some very strong winds,’ she said.

‘We’ll have some really breezy conditions on Monday and some showers. The winds will make it feel cooler.’
