Footwear that says Dave is trying to stay fit on his hols!

- By David Wilkes

FROM jogging in the park to discussing his low- carb diets on the radio, his struggle to stay in shape is no secret.

And it seems David Cameron is not prepared to take a break from his fitness regime even on holiday – if these shoes really do offer the benefits they are praised for.

The Prime Minister was seen wearing a pair of FitFlop shoes – which fans say can help you to tone up and burn calories just by walking in them – as he relaxed at a harbourside cafe with a beer on his latest trip to Portugal with wife Samantha.

It is claimed the shoes destabilise the foot and force the muscles in your legs and bottom to work harder by engaging muscles for longer with each step.

But quite how effective they are has been a matter of some debate. A study in 2012 found ‘no significant difference’ in the activity of

‘Snacking is my downfall’

muscles in the calves, thighs and buttocks when volunteers wore them. Yesterday a FitFlop spokesman said: ‘We do not claim any reference to toning or muscle-activating.’

But that hasn’t stopped the shoes earning an army of celebrity fans, including Nigella Lawson and Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding. The photograph of Mr Cameron in his pair of ‘night blue’ Fit-Flop shoes, which would cost around £85, was released by No 10 as he and Mrs Cameron began their holiday in Alvor, Portugal.

Mrs Cameron, who recently topped Vanity Fair’s best dressed list, kicked off her flipflops. This allowed her to show off a perfect pedicure that was a far cry from the yellowing toenails and worn skin she revealed when she took off her shoes while visiting a voter’s home in London during the Election campaign.

Earlier this year, Mr Cameron announced he had given up bread and snacks as part of ‘a great patriotic struggle’ to lose weight.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sussex, he said: ‘It is difficult when you’re on the road a lot. I think my downfall is, when you get hungry in the middle of the day, having a snack. I think that’s the thing you’ve got to cut out, isn’t it? I’m giving up bread. Cut the carbs and go for a run.’

The Prime Minister was pictured jogging through Westminster last year, but it is thought his efforts to go running may have been hampered recently by knee injuries. He wore support bandages on both legs during a cross- country run in the Cotswolds last December, and in January a physiotherapist was seen paying a visit to No 10.
