... BUT CLARKE WAS COMPLETELY OUT OF NICK
CHRIS ROGERS
One of the few who has learnt a lot in England. Played consistently well, though less certain with Broad round the wicket.
DAVID WARNER
Fantastic talent but needed to convert at least one of his four secondinnings 50s into a hundred. Too good for those silly little flick-pulls.
STEVE SMITH
As I thought, Smith looked a world-beater on a flat track at Lord’s but less secure when the ball was moving around.
MICHAEL CLARKE
Completely out of nick. Credit to England for never allowing Clarke to look balanced at the crease. Out-captained, too, by Cook.
ADAM VOGES
I thought he’d cope better with English conditions but he pushed hard outside off stump and England targeted his pads.
SHANE WATSON
I was surprised Australia dropped him after one Test. Prone to be out lbw, but England were delighted to bowl at the Marsh brothers instead.
MITCHELL MARSH
Un-Australian to leave him out after two Tests. Batting looked robotic but he was a better bowler than expected.
SHAUN MARSH
Two terrible shots outside off stump at Trent Bridge. No matter how many warm-up runs you’ve scored, you’ve got to show more patience.
BRAD HADDIN
What would have happened if he’d caught Root early on at Cardiff? It was a hard decision to leave him out at Edgbaston after family issues, but probably right.
PETER NEVILL
Showed others what was possible by getting his head down. He played late and tried to grind it out. Kept really well.
MITCHELL JOHNSON
Hasn’t bowled badly but the paceman (left) just needs to learn when to use his variations in English conditions.
MITCHELL STARC
Bowled really well at times,
though sprayed it around at others. Began the series trying to beat the right-handers on the inside but has added a delivery that threatens their outside edge.
JOSH HAZLEWOOD
He’s got 16 wickets at 25 but struggled at times with his line. Knows he can do better.
NATHAN LYON
No-one’s managed to get after him consistently and he’s provided Clarke with some control.
