HOWE BACKS WILSON TO EMULATE AUSTIN AND INGS
EDDIE HOWE believes Callum Wilson can follow in the footsteps of the strikers who stepped up from the Championship last season and scored a combined 34 league goals. Wilson’s emphatic overhead kick against Leicester was his fourth Premier League goal already this season, following a hat-trick a week earlier against West Ham. Charlie Austin netted 18 for Queens Park Rangers, Danny Ings 11 for Burnley and Jamie Vardy five for Leicester. Their goals earned Austin and Vardy England call-ups. Wilson’s goal was not enough for Bournemouth to win the match as Vardy scored a late equaliser from the penalty spot, but Howe is confident there are more goals to come. ‘I don’t see why not,’ Howe said. ‘Callum has to believe that and he’s young, very progressive and he’ll only improve. He’s a good finisher and I think you’ve seen that against Leicester and at West Ham. He knows where the goal is and is very composed. ‘What you’ll get from Callum is a lot of work. He’s a very dedicated guy, an extremely hardworking professional and you’ll get pace and goals. He’s a real handful. He did well again against two very experienced players and took his goal very well.’ There was an unusual lull after Wilson’s acrobatic effort hit the back of the net —the player, his team-mates and the crowd seemed in disbelief at what they had witnessed. Wilson (left) said:
‘Next time, hopefully my teammates will realise it has gone in a bit sooner. I’ve hit it, I knew it had gone in but as I’ve got up and started celebrating everybody was just standing there and looking at me as if to say, “What are you doing?” So I looked at the linesman and saw that his flag was down and he was jogging back to the halfway line so I just carried on celebrating.’
SUPERSTAT: Jamie Vardy has three goals and an assist in his last five
Premier League appearances.
