Fortitude of Ken the elder
KEN CLARKE is in Beijing representing HMG at China’s celebrations to mark the end of World War II (regarded more as a celebration of victory over Japan).
But why was he chosen? He is, after all, no longer a Government minister. Ah yes, but he is 75. When dealing with a gerontocracy such as China, this is important, so it is a great triumph for oldie power.
We could have sent a Foreign Office minister but, by Chinese standards, they are too young and spotty. Prince Charles is, of course, a non-starter as he once called the Chinese leadership ‘appalling old waxworks’.
Ken is also quite keen on Chinese grub, I believe (though even fonder of an Indian curry).
His wife Gillian died just a few weeks ago. It shows remarkable fortitude that he feels strong enough to undertake such a long journey.
