Follow-up
TErry rATTIGAN’S letter (Peterborough) reminded me of my apprenticeship in the Navy. I joined hMS Fisgard in Torpoint at 15 in 1951. When we returned from leave, we were subjected to a ‘short arm’ inspection. This entailed the whole dormitory dropping their trousers so that we could be inspected by the Mo who carried a cane to lift the vital parts for inspection. We accepted this as normal procedure and could laugh about it afterwards.
