RFU shamed by dirty media tent

- Charles Sale

ENGLAND’S otherwise meticulous preparations for the rugby World Cup have been let down by the shambolic RFU media facility at Pennyhill Park.

the RFU, the richest rugby union in the world, have spent millions of pounds on a state-of-theart training performance centre at England’s hotel base in Surrey.

But the cut-price, third-hand, heavily stained marquee held up by rusting stanchions installed in the nearby car park to house the world’s media for England press conferences is an embarrassment for the host nation.

As well as bizarrely providing church-hall trestle tables and scout-hut chairs for the media workroom, plus inadequate toilets and heating and no catering facilities, the half-finished interior isn’t properly divided so outside noises disrupt press briefings.

A strong smell of sewage at the entrance to the tent sums up the whole badly planned project, which bears no comparison whatsoever to the excellent England media facilities the FA laid on in rio for the football World Cup.

England head coach Stuart lancaster denies any involvement in the media marquee, saying his influence was purely in the performance centre next door where the media are banned from entering, as they are from the players’ hotel.

England rugby 2015 have been made fully aware of media concerns but say they can only make the same improvements for England as they would all the other competing countries.

An Er 2015 spokeswoman said: ‘the England team are in camp and the facilities currently are a matter for England, who chose a temporary structure as their media facility. But by the time Pennyhill becomes an official team base on September 14, it will look and feel different.’

the RFU said: ‘We are at the testing phase and are confident all facilities will be ready for the start of the tournament in two weeks’ time.’

DAVID BECKHAM certainly sang for his supper when he was presented with a Legend of Football award at the HMV Football Extravaganza on behalf of music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins. Not only did he fork out £10,000 for an Arsenal shirt for his son Romeo’s birthday but when two guests both bid £55,000 at the auction to have dinner with him, he agreed to attend two meals.

FORMER England international Graeme le Saux was speaking at a football conference about fake football merchandise this week when he discovered that someone had hacked into his email account and set up a money-making scam.

le Saux (right) said: ‘looks like i will have to deal with an attack on my image as soon as i finish speaking. if you receive an email from me urging you to invest money, don’t.’

PETER SCHMEICHEL proved at the Champions League draw that former players don’t make the best TV hosts. Yet despite Schmeichel’s wooden performance, UEFA chief Michel Platini still wants two former French internationals to host the 2016 European Championship draw in December.
