FOOTBALLERS WHO WENT ON STRIKE...

-

CARLOS TEVEZ (Man City)

REFUSED to come on as a substitute against Bayern Munich in 2011 and was suspended. Apologised five months later and returned to the team until moving to Juventus in 2013.

GEORGE BEST (Man Utd)

MISSED a training session in January 1974 — allegedly after three days of partying — and was dropped by Tommy Docherty. Refused to play for United again but not released until the following season.

PIERRE VAN HOOIJDONK (Nottingham Forest)

WENT on strike for the first three months of the season in 1998 when his transfer request was turned down. Returned in November but when he scored on his third game back his team-mates did not celebrate with him. Sold to Vitesse Arnhem in 1999.

PAUL SCHOLES (Man Utd)

FINED two weeks’ wages after refusing to play with United’s second string in a League Cup tie away to Arsenal in 2001. The midfielder clashed with Sir Alex Ferguson when he learned of his selection and did not travel to London.

KIERON DYER (Newcastle)

DROPPED to the bench after he refused to play on the right wing against Middlesbrough in 2004. Later said he felt responsible for manager Bobby Robson’s sacking two weeks later. Described the incident as the biggest mistake of his career.
