Should Britain welcome more migrants?

-

DURING 1943, in Nazi-occupied France, my mother risked her own life to help Jewish families. Our parents thought they were fighting the war for the values of humanity and decency. How ironic it is that today it’s Germany and not Britain which is showing these values towards people desperately fleeing for their lives. Their society will be the richer for it while ours, with our meanness and indifference towards those in dire need, will be the poorer. Look at the courage, resourcefulness and sheer guts these refugees have. They are just the people our country needs.

ANN PETTITT, Llanpumsaint, Carms. ThaT yvette Cooper suggests the failure by Britain to admit the vast hordes fleeing from islamic State is ‘immoral’, ‘cowardly’ and ‘not the British way’ proves how vastly out of touch she and other politicians are with immigration policies. in Britain, we have had millions of migrants over a very short period of time, in which infrastructure, public services, education and housing have simply not had time to catch up. The ordinary working person has seen their wages stagnate and be undercut, and their employment rights taken back to Victorian times. Britain must stand firm and say enough is enough.

RICH HUTCHINGS, Derby. IF WE’RE receiving enough immigrants every year to fill a city the size of Birmingham (Mail), it should be a simple equation to ascertain how many houses, hospitals, schools, police stations, etc., Birmingham uses for the Government to provide the facilities needed.

ROY ATTWOOD, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The eU wants member countries to have quotas for immigrants. Can the 330,000 migrants we’ve taken in a year, the estimated 1.1 million illegal immigrants or the eight million total of foreign-born residents now in the country be taken into consideration?
