‘Third time lucky’: Tragic final text of suicide student, 22
A 22-YEAR- OLD student who committed suicide after two failed attempts sent her boyfriend a tragic final text saying: ‘Third time lucky’.
Jasmine Mitchell, a model and veterinary student, hanged herself after a row with her boyfriend Ryan Spring, just hours before she was due to take her final university exam.
An inquest heard that she shared a flat in Newport, Shropshire, with two other students, who were both at home and could hear the couple arguing upstairs between 9pm and 11pm on May 21.
After Mr Spring left the house, Miss Mitchell, known as Jazz, apparently twice attempted to kill herself. She then sent the text to Mr Spring saying ‘third time lucky’ before hanging herself.
Miss Mitchell, who was a keen rugby player and represented Old Newtonians RFC in Leicestershire, had been due to sit her final exam for her veterinary course at Harper Adams University in Newport the following morning.
She needed just 10 per cent to pass and was not unduly worried, the inquest at Shrewsbury Coroner’s Court heard.
Miss Mitchell, who liked to travel and had gone on a safari in Africa in 2011, had also been planning to visit her mother Tracey in Leicester after the exam.
John Ellery, senior coroner for Shropshire, recorded a verdict of suicide after reviewing Miss Mitchell’s mobile phone records. He said: ‘Suicide can never be presumed but in this case I am satisfied that Jazz intended to kill herself.
‘It is also apparent that the decision to do so may have been formed on the spur of the moment.
‘It was not an accident – Jazz was an intelligent lady in full control of her senses.’ Following her death, friends and family paid tribute to Miss Mitchell on her Facebook page. Family friend Aidy Dalton wrote: ‘You spent your life travelling far and wide so we hope you like where you are now resting and can enjoy the sun shining on you.’
Close friend Rebecca Chapman, 22, said: ‘We were absolutely devastated and, of course, shocked. She was a breath of fresh air to everyone who met her.’ Cathy Ellerbeck posted: ‘Jazz I still can’t stop thinking about you, I miss you so much.
