I’m not moving! Two Mercedes drivers refuse to back down in tunnel stand-off
A TUNNEL was blocked for 40 minutes because two drivers both refused to give way.
The stand-off took place when an elderly man drove through and met a woman in a Mercedes convertible coming the other way. The woman refused to back down, insisting that she had right of way and should not have to reverse.
But the man was unable to manoeuvre his own Mercedes out of the tunnel, and remarkably the pair’s stalemate lasted for almost three-quarters of an hour. A video of the drama in Maidenhead, Berkshire shows infuriated motorists leaving their cars and approaching the woman to plead with her to reverse out of the way.
Speaking to Mail Online, Brad Haverly, who shot the footage, said: ‘The woman was ignoring the comments and was adamant that she was in the right. ‘Legally she was in the right but the video shows the man was two-thirds of the way through. She committed to driving through too late and should have given way.’
At the start of the video, one man can be heard saying to the woman: ‘Look, this fella is scared out of his wits.’ But 15 minutes into the deadlock and she still clearly has no intention of moving her vehicle – and a look at the road behind her shows traffic extending around the bend. Five minutes later an angry man approaches her and says: ‘There are mums here trying to get their kids from school.’ Around 30 minutes into the ordeal the man attempts to reverse his car but almost crashes into the woman’s Mercedes.
The video concludes with him finally managing to reverse out of the tunnel and the motorists returning to their vehicles. Mr Haverley said that police had been called but that both drivers had left before they arrived.
