Briton, 18, dies in Ibiza ‘after adverse reaction to ecstasy’

-

A BRITISH teenager has died from a suspected reaction to ecstasy tablets in Ibiza.

Danielle McCallum, 18, fell ill at her hotel in the party resort of San Antonio in the early hours of Tuesday.

She was taken to a local hospital at 4am by friends who are said to have told staff that she had taken several ecstasy tablets.

When her condition worsened she was rushed to the Spanish island’s main Can Misses Hospital, where she died in intensive care two hours later from heart failure.

Miss McCallum, from Greenock in Renfrewshire, is said to have taken the drug before the weekend and felt unwell soon after, but did not seek help because she was bedridden after a fall. A doctor eventually saw her at the hotel she was staying in before getting her admitted to hospital.

A police source said last night: ‘Everything at this stage is pointing to the British woman’s death being drugs related.’ But her grandfather, Andy McDonald, denied she was killed by drugs, adding: ‘She wasn’t out all weekend because she fell on the Thursday night into Friday morning and damaged her back.

‘She didn’t leave the hotel again until she died in hospital yesterday morning. What has been said about drugs is a load of rubbish.’

Police have begun an investigation, and a post-mortem examination was due to be carried out yesterday.
