Wales probe over training slip

- By CHRIS FOY

WALES were last night being investigated by World Rugby for a potential breach of tournament regulations, after several leading players from outside their squad took part in training yesterday. As head coach Warren Gatland awaits medical bulletins on Samson Lee and Paul James, two props thought to be on stand-by to be called up as injury cover — Nicky Smith and Rob Evans — were among those involved in a session at the London Irish training ground in Sudbury. The others were Rhys Patchell, Jordan Williams, Dan Baker, Kristian Dacey, Dan Fish and Aled Summerhill. World Cup regulations state that back-up players who did not make the 31-man World Cup squad are not allowed to take part in training or stay at the hotel. Teams are permitted to bring in outsiders — from local clubs, for instance — to supplement their numbers in training, but not men who have been part of their wider plans and preparation. There was no comment from World Rugby last night — although the indications were that they consider this to be an honest mistake. Wales were adamant that the additional players had joined training solely as defence cover for just one day and returned home afterwards. They believe they have not contravened regulations and even if found guilty of a breach there is no prospect of a points deduction. Meanwhile Anthony Watson insists Sam Burgess’s presence in England’s midfield for Saturday’s Pool A clash with Wales will not reduce the attacking threat. ‘The amount of repetitions we put into training, with different combinations, it’s almost becoming instinct,’ Watson said. ‘Those guys are more than capable of coming in. Sam has been a quality player wherever we’ve put him. You’re going to see his qualities shine wherever he plays.’
