BROKEN WRIST CAN’T STOP VARDY FIRING

- By LAURIE WHITWELL

JAMIE VARDY has reached the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts despite playing with two broken bones in his wrist. The Leicester City striker scored twice against Arsenal to take his season’s top-flight tally to six and is expected to earn another England call-up for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania next month. But he will have to wear a tailormade cast on his right wrist for the next two months to heal an injury sustained during Leicester’s comeback win against Aston Villa on September 13. Vardy said: ‘I knew something was wrong because my whole arm was numb. But I didn’t want to come off so I just had it strapped up. I had it X-rayed the next day and unfortunately there were two cracks in my wrist. ‘I’ve got a game cast which refs are happy with. It’s lightweight and there’s no chance of harming anyone. I’m having to wear it for eight weeks.’ It is not the first time Vardy has played through pain. He put himself forward during last season’s great escape from relegation despite an injury to his foot. ‘At the back end of the season I damaged my plantar fascia in my foot which affects my sprinting,’ he said. ‘I wasn’t able to put any ridiculous pressure on it so I was having injections an hour-and-ahalf before kick-off and my foot would be numb. I don’t want to not be playing — it’s as simple as that.’ Vardy’s ascent to the top of the Premier League goalscorers table comes just three years after he was playing non-league football for Fleetwood Town. Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri believes his form has been enhanced by his England selection.
