A LOOK INSIDE WAYNE’S PRIVATE WORLD
(and who knew he writes verse!)
He grew up playing football with jumpers for goalposts in a working-class suburb.
So england captain Wayne Rooney wants to make sure his sons enjoy a few luxuries.
The £300,000-a-week Manchester United striker has turned his Cheshire mansion into a giant playground for himself and his children. Rooney, 29, allowed cameras a glimpse of his off- field life for a documentary to mark his achievement of becoming england’s greatest goalscorer.
Inside his house there is a games room with pool table and arcade machines, and guitars signed by Sir Paul McCartney and Oasis star Noel Gallagher.
Outside, the vast garden contains a cabin-like climbing frame, inflatables, a caravan-style den – and, of course, a set of real goalposts for kick-arounds with sons Kai, five, and Klay, two.
Wife Coleen, 29, tells presenter Gary Lineker that ‘the whole house has been turned into kiddie land’.
Rooney says that while he is a devoted family man, it is his wife who wears the trousers at home. He says: ‘Outside of football [Coleen is] the strong one, so she makes all the decisions.’
Rooney adds that his wife can be ‘bossy’ but quickly rephrases that to ‘organised’. Mrs Rooney, who is expecting their third child, says: ‘You would forget everything and anything if I didn’t tell you what to do. If Wayne needs telling off I’ll tell him off.’
The documentary, Wayne Rooney: The Man Behind the Goals, to be shown on BBC1 on Monday, reveals the tough footballer’s surprise sensitive side.
He enjoys writing poetry and often pens verses to surprise his wife – his childhood sweetheart – whom he married in 2008.
