Cameron’s the better PM with a 24-point poll lead

-

DAVID Cameron has opened up a 24point lead over Jeremy Corbyn on the question of who is better equipped to be prime minister.

Two weeks after the election of Labour’s hard-left leader, a survey shows 54 per cent of voters say the current Tory Prime Minister is the more favourable choice.

Just 30 per cent say the opposite, preferring Mr Corbyn to Mr Cameron, according to the ComRes poll for the Daily Mail.

The results suggest Mr Corbyn has not benefited from the sort of honeymoon period traditionally enjoyed by new party leaders.

In a sign of the deep divisions within Labour, 26 per cent of the party’s voters say Mr Cameron is better

equipped to be prime minister than their own leader.

Two-thirds of Labour voters chose Mr Corbyn, while the remainder did not know.

Meanwhile, the Tories are far more likely to be trusted to run the economy than Labour, on 48 per cent to 29 per cent, according to the poll of more than 1,000 adults. The remaining 23 per cent either trusted neither party more or did not know.

The news coincides with new Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell’s pledge to move party policy further to the left with a tax assault on the middle classes.

Labour is trusted by 43 per cent on health, compared with 30 per cent who trust the Tories more. On welfare, Labour leads with 42 per cent to 33 per cent. And the Tories are trusted more on defence, on 46 per cent compared with Labour’s 27 per cent.

On overall voting intentions, the Tories are now 9 points ahead of Labour, scoring 39 per cent compared with 30 per cent.
