Mother, 44, accused of seducing boy, 15, with ‘let’s get naughty’ messages

- By Ben Wilkinson

a MOther ‘obsessed’ with a 15year-old boy groomed him on Facebook with lewd messages and photos of her breasts, a court heard.

Karen Seldon, 44, targeted the boy online before enticing him to her home for sex, jurors were told.

But the affair ended when the boy’s mother confronted Seldon at her home and found her son shirtless and pulling up his trousers, the trial heard.

the boy told police that his friends thought he was a ‘legend’ after he boasted about sex with the woman nearly three times his age. But Seldon denies the charges and claims the boy is a ‘fantasist’ with a ‘vendetta’ against her family.

Newport Crown Court heard Seldon lured the schoolboy by sending him pictures of her breasts and bottom on Facebook, with the message: ‘Let’s get naughty’.

Prosecutor Suzanne thomas said Seldon asked him whether he liked role playing and asked him to send pictures of himself. She added: ‘She sent him a message saying: “Let’s get naughty” and asked him to come to her house. She took him into the living room and told him that she wanted him.’

the boy’s mother and aunt went over to Seldon’s home in abercarn, near Caerphilly, South Wales, to confront her after hearing about the alleged affair. Miss thomas said: ‘ there was a great deal of shouting and scuffling.’

the boy’s mother told jurors: ‘I asked her what she was doing with my 15-year-old son and she said she was sorry and had made a mistake.’ the boy told police Seldon had been ‘obsessed’ with him for a long time and he admitted friends had called him a ‘lad’ and a ‘legend’ after he told them about the affair. But defence barrister James evans accused the boy of making it all up.

he said: ‘everything you told the police that day about your sexual conquest of Karen Seldon was just your sexual fantasies about her. Nothing actually happened.

‘It’s something you have fantasies about, things you told your friends to look like a lad and a legend.’

the court heard gwent Police failed to find any of the incriminating messages on the boy’s Facebook page and the teenager claimed he had forgotten his password and deactivated his account.

Mr evans told him: ‘It’s convenient for you that you forgot your password. I suggest you deliberately forgot your password because if your account was recovered the messages wouldn’t be on there.’

Seldon’s barrister also asked the boy’s aunt whether the injuries Seldon had when she was arrested, including bruising to her neck and arms, had been caused by any of the intruders.

Mr evans also suggested the boy had not been in the property at all that evening, and the family members had gone there to accost Seldon in response to lies the boy had spread. Seldon denies four charges relating to sexual activity with a minor. When she was arrested she denied having any sexual activity with the boy and denied sending him Facebook messages.

In a police interview, she said: ‘the boy is nothing but a fantasist and a liar – the truth will come out. he has a vendetta against me and my daughter.’

PC Laura hancock arrested Seldon hours after she was confronted by the boy’s family in September last year. She told jurors that Seldon was drunk, but also said there was no dNa evidence of the boy ever being in Seldon’s car, and his t- shirt – which he told detectives had been left at the house – had not been recovered.

the trial continues.
