I’m a disturbed, unstable metrosexual Neanderthal

What Becky Watts’ stepbrother ‘told officers after he was arrested’

BECKY Watts’ killer told police that he was a ‘psychologically disturbed, metrosexual Neanderthal’ after his arrest, a jury heard yesterday.

Nathan Matthews, who admits killing his stepsister but denies her murder, said he was ‘like a caveman’.

He had been arrested for kidnapping 16-year-old Becky before her dismembered body was found near his home.

Police had asked Matthews what he meant when he said he was an ‘emotionally unstable, psychologically disturbed, metrosexual Neanderthal’.

The 28-year-old replied: ‘I just Googled it [metrosexual].

‘Basically in touch with my feminine side, camp, gay, that kind of thing.

‘Grumpy, a basic-thinking man. Like obviously not highly intelligent.

‘Just like a caveman. Like obviously I’ve got a hairy beard, but that’s not anything to do with it.’

After he was arrested for murder and officers listed the evidence against him, he confessed to killing Becky and told police where her body was.

He said he had gone to her home in Bristol armed with a stun gun, tape and handcuffs. The former Territorial Army soldier told police he strangled Becky in a bungled kidnap, panicking after his mask slipped as he tried to bundle her into a bag.

Matthews – who put his fingers in his ears when his solicitor read his confession to police – said he had planned to drive her out to the woods and threaten her, Bristol Crown Court heard.

He confessed: ‘I had developed an idea of kidnapping Becky. I believed she was selfish and her behaviour towards my mother was a risk to her health.’

He said he came up with idea after seeing a TV show and having a couple of dreams, planning to ‘scare her saying something along the lines of: “You have to start treating people better. This could happen again or worse.”’

But the prosecution say Matthews and lover Shauna Hoare, 21, murdered Becky after a kidnap plot driven by their ‘unnatural’ lust for ‘petite’ girls.

The Crown also claim Hoare helped her lover cut up Becky’s corpse with a circular saw and stash her body parts in a garden shed. Matthews claims he alone killed Becky on February 19 while Hoare was in the garden.

He then stashed the bag containing Becky’s body in the car before his girlfriend came into the house, he said.

The jury heard he moved the body to the bathroom of his home while Hoare was asleep, telling her the toilet was blocked so she would not go in the room.

In the following days he left Hoare at his mother’s house and returned to ‘dispose of the body’, the jury heard.

He said he hadn’t admitted to the killing sooner partly due to ‘a wish to avoid the pain and disappointment’ it would cause to Hoare and his family. Matthews – who broke down in tears in later interviews – said Hoare, who denies all charges, did not play any part in the crime. He said: ‘Had she known she would have reported me to the police.’

Matthews also denies conspiracy to kidnap, but admits perverting the course of justice, preventing Becky’s burial and possessing a prohibited weapon. The trial continues.
