KNACKERED MOTHERS’ WINE CLUB
BARGAIN OF THE WEEK
Douglas Green Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, £5.99 (normally £7.99), Waitrose FROM South Africa, this gorgeous Cabernet is warm, figgy and rich with ripe blackcurrant flavours. There’s a lovely smokiness, too. Quality for the money.
WHITE
Rina Ianga Grillo Viognier 2014, £9.99, Budgens/Londis THIS one’s definitely filed under ‘unusual blends’, made from the Italian Grillo grape along with a generous dollop of Viognier. But that’s not the only interesting thing about it. It’s also organic. This tastes peachy, perky and full of flavour. A real Sicilian treat.
FOOD PAIRING:
Creamy pasta.
RED
Mission Estate Winery Cabernet Merlot 2013, £9.95, The Wine Society FROM the oldest winery in New Zealand, on the North Island in the Hawkes Bay region. This area has always been good at blends based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Juicy with black fruits and spice. Big but not shouty — the opposite to my children, really.
FOOD PAIRING:
Sausages & mash.
ROSE
Sancerre Rose 2014, £9, Asda USUALLY, pink wines from Sancerre are on the other side of a tenner, but this sneaks just under. Made from the Pinot Noir grape, it’s definitely a great value Bright Young Thing. Simple, but oh so effective.
FOOD PAIRING:
Crisps and dips.
