PICK OF THE DAY
GINO’S ITALIAN ESCAPE, 8PM, ITV
EPISODE four finds Gino D’Acampo (pictured) paying his first-ever visit to the island of Sicily. One of the settings for The Godfather, home of Marsala wine and site of Mount Etna, Sicily has been a ‘crossroads’ for food and culture for 3,000 years. Arriving in the chaotic, ‘magnificently dishevelled’ capital of Palermo, Gino immerses himself in the ‘deadly serious business’ of its vibrant streetfood culture. But the city is also notorious for its Mafia heritage; the mob extorts more than 160 million euros every year. Taking a rare turn for the sombre, Gino is rendered speechless by the owner of a family-run restaurant that refused to play ball, before stopping off at some deeply creepy catacombs.
