GARDE JETS TO TRANSFER TALKS

- By LAURIE WHITWELL

REMI GARDE has flown to New York to discuss potential January signings with Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner. Villa chief executive Tom Fox confirmed Garde would be backed as he attempts to drag his side away from relegation. Villa are bottom of the table on six points from 16 games, eight points from safety — Garde arrived in October after the sacking of Tim Sherwood. No club has survived from such a position in Premier League history but Villa believe a miraculous escape is still achievable with the next four games against Newcastle, West Ham, Norwich and Sunderland appearing pivotal. Lerner has been looking to sell up since summer 2014 but still runs the club and would open his wallet if Garde identifies targets. ‘It’s up to Remi,’ said Fox. ‘If he decides he needs something he has the chairman’s ear and his support, absolutely. Right now the focus is on the players we have and getting the results over the Christmas period.’ Garde confirmed interest in Ashley Cole last week, and a proven goalscorer and a winger would also appeal. Recruitment was a source of friction for Sherwood, who was frustrated that more of his targets were not secured. Villa did agree a deal for Emmanuel Adebayor before the then-Tottenham striker opted out. The club pulled the plug on a move for Aaron Lennon because the winger demanded a release clause in the event of relegation. Twelve senior professionals were brought in for around £55m, with sales recouping £40m. Fox added: ‘Remi has to determine what he wants his squad to look like and who he’s got who can play the style he wants. It’s his decision. If he decides when it comes to January there are things he wants to do, that will be something he can do. ‘I think it’s premature. He’s had a few games under his belt and he’s got some very important ones coming up, too. He will let those games play out before determining what he’s thinking.’
