Yule never believe it! Xmas tree is 115 years old

- By Susie Coen

WHEN we told you about Derek and Sybil Parker, who have had the same Christmas tree for 78 years, we thought Mail readers would be quick to outdo them.

And so it proved. We found one reader who still uses a tree that is at least 115 years old.

Actress Pamela Binns, 84, from North West London, said her grandparents had it before her mother was born in 1901.

‘I bring it out every year and remember seeing the tree as a little girl,’ she said.

Eric and Eileen Wilson get out their 92-year-old tree every year at their home near Leeds.

‘The tree was purchased for my late brother’s first birthday,’ Mrs Wilson said. ‘When my parents died in the 1980s, we took over the tree.’

George Faulkner, 96, from Rugby, Warwickshire, is also decorating his tree for its ninety-second Christmas.

It belonged to his late wife Margery, whose parents bought it for her from Woolworths in 1924 for sixpence (2½p).

‘I’ve only ever had to mend one branch,’ he said.

Jennifer James, 70, from North Wales, has had a pair of silver bells in her family for over 100 years. ‘They were bought for my mother, who would have been 106 this year. She remembered them being on the tree as a child and I remember them when I was a little girl,’ she said.

A 79- year- old paper fairy bought by his mother sits on top of the tree at the Oxford home of Ray Wright, 72.

Jim Fitzgerald, 74, from Essex, has had his gold Christmas decoration in the family for over 80 years and Sandra Thurlow, 61, from Leicestershire, has two Santa ornaments which are 90 years old.
