A growing tide of tributes

-

WELL-wishers held each other and wept yesterday as the sea of flowers laid in David Bowie’s memory continued to grow.

Many hugged each other for comfort as they paid tribute to the singer in Brixton, south London, where he was born.

They gathered at a mural dedicated to the star, which shows him on the cover of his 1973 album Aladdin Sane.

The impromptu shrine was set up on Monday soon after his death was announced and has become a focal point for fans – many of whom say they feel like they have lost someone close to them. The sombre scenes were in contrast to the night before when scores took to the streets of Brixton for mass singalongs of Bowie’s biggest hits, including Starman and Let’s Dance.

The event’s organiser described the night as ‘perfect... what he would have wanted’.

Other sites connected to Bowie – such as his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and his former apartment in Berlin – have become further focus points for mourners.

His ex-wife Angie Bowie was also shown crying in the Celebrity Big Brother house – however Channel 5 were criticised for using the footage to promote last night’s instalment of the reality TV programme.

A spokesman for the show said the 66year-old had decided to stay in the house of her own accord after hearing the news.
