Quiz show student who has a lot to learn
IT is often joked that students do little but sit around and watch quiz shows.
But one undergraduate may have helped dispel that myth once and for all – after becoming the ‘worst ever contestant’ to appear on one such programme.
Hannah Mastrangelo, who is studying French and Italian at Bath University, was unable to answer any questions correctly during the first round of popular ITV teatime show The Chase.
The 20-year-old, from West Sussex, then admitted she was guessing the answers in the subsequent round and overall provided just one correct response.
Before the questions even started she had struggled. Asked by show host Bradley Walsh to say ‘Hello Brad, it’s a pleasure being on The Chase,’ in both the languages she is studying, she only managed ‘bonjour’ and ‘ciao’.
Then, during the first round he asked her: The ‘Attenborosaurus’ dinosaur was named in honour of which TV Naturalist? Miss Mastrangelo failed to pick up the clue in the name and chose to pass, unable to correctly answer Sir David Attenborough.
And when Walsh asked Miss Mastrangelo, ‘former actress Nancy Davis is better known by which married surname?’ she
‘Unlucky with the questions’
incorrectly replied it was fictional detective Nancy Drew. The answer is Nancy Reagan.
After failing to answer any of the eight questions in the first round, Walsh told her: ‘Can I be honest Hannah, you don’t know an awful lot do you?’ Ant and Dec took to Twitter to brand her performance ‘b***** awful’. In The Chase, contestants play against a professional quizzer, known as The Chaser, both individually and as a team.
Remarkably, Miss Mastrangelo was still able to walk away with a cash prize after her fellow contestants were able to correctly answer 16 questions and won £8,000 to split between three of them.
She said she would put her £2,666 towards a trip to the Bahamas with her family.
Her performance did not go unnoticed by social media users. One wrote: ‘Can’t believe Hannah on The Chase has won after being the worst-ever contestant.’
Speaking from Italy, where she is skiing with her father, Miss Mastrangelo, 20, said: ‘When you’re mind goes blank there’s nothing much you can do.’ She added: ‘I think I was just unlucky with the questions.’
