University ban on ‘camp’ fancy dress to avoid offending gays

- Daily Mail Reporter

STUDENTS at Edinburgh University have been banned from dressing up in ‘camp’ costumes in case they upset the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender community,

Nor should they risk causing offence by wearing outfits characterising Mexicans, Native Americans, Arabs – even gangsters.

The bizarre rules clamping down on fancy dress that represents cultural stereotypes have been issued by Edinburgh University Students’ Association. But It prompted a backlash from some on campus who branded the diktat a ‘joke’.

The EUSA policy states: ‘You may not intend to hurt anyone when picking out your costume, and you may not even think there’s a problem, but it’s important to consider the impact your choices will have.’

The document also says: ‘It is not acceptable to use props to emphasise racial characteristics in order to convey an individual or character. A good costume should be clear enough that you do not need racial or cultural additions.’

Charlie Peters, 19, a philosophy student who started an online petition in protest, said: ‘Students are being coddled and hidden from offensive, or even simply different, views.’

Jonny Ross Tatam, EUSA president, said the policy was intended ‘to broaden free speech, not restrict it’, adding: ‘We’re committed to ensuring everyone feels able to participate in debate and discussion within our venues.’
