Asda staff face canteen cut
THE supermarket price war and the squeeze on the big four grocers has forced Asda into drastic cost cutting.
Job cuts and an end to its staff canteen with free tea, coffee and toast are on the cards as it desperately tries to save money in the face of fierce competition from discounters Aldi and Lidl.
More than 5,000 staff are involved in consultations as it reviews the future of some of the services it has in stores, including photo centres, ‘Create your own pizza’ counters and its George at Asda customer desks. Pharmacy opening times could also be shortened.
It is reported that the consultation could lead to up to 1,000 job losses.
However, Asda said it will focus on moving staff into other areas of stores.
Earlier this week it announced 200 jobs cuts across offices in Leeds and Leicestershire. Asda, owned by US giant Walmart, has not yet revealed its Christmas trading performance.
Last week research firm Kantar Worldpanel warned its sales may have fallen 3.5pc in the 12 weeks to January 3, which would mean its market share has fallen 0.6pc to 16.2pc.
An Asda spokesman said the changes would allow it to react quicker by becoming leaner and more agile.
If its staff canteens close, it will instead provide vending machines, fridges and microwaves.
The cost-cutting is part of its 18month long ‘Project Renewal’ to help it compete in a tougher grocery market. ÷ THE boss of George clothing at the group has quit. Fiona Lambert, vicepresident of own-label development, has decided to leave. Asda is searching for a replacement.
