WHAT HAS HE GOT?

HAVING impressed in a friendly, the winger was invited to join Charlton and his abilities made an immediate impression. Holding a wide-left position, his control when accepting the ball irritates the opposing full back, who cannot get an early tackle in as he shields the ball with good body strength. Taking the ball in his stride, he is able to move inside comfortably with left-footed control but crucially can also make an angle on the outside of the full back to deliver a cross. He takes Charlton’s free-kicks out wide and in a recent game delivered a wickedly bending set-piece seeking a forward’s touch. He also twice cut in to hit forceful right-foot efforts, missing the target. But he is not reluctant to shoot and this shows confidence. Only around 5ft 9in, he gives the appearance of a squat middleweight-type figure, well-built and strong on the ball. He has speed, not excessive, but enough to get away from his full back — and looks determined. He has a hamstring injury but a club may take an early gamble in this window, given his impact.

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

ALTHOUGH he offers good width, Lookman needs to learn the value of running off the ball. On several occasions he watched his midfield player transfixed, whereas if he had made a move inside to take his marker away from the touchline, he could have left space for his full back to join the attack. When the play was developing along the opposite flank, he did not make strides quickly enough into the danger area to support his central striker. You have to add goalscoring as a winger, and find that tiny pocket of space in the box.
