I’m in a time warp, says pensioner stuck on BST

- By James Tozer

MOST of us look forward to the start of British Summer Time and the lighter evenings.

But one couple won’t have to wait until the end of March.

For Jim and Barbara Casey refused to put their clocks back last October and have been on BST all winter.

Retired hotelier Mr Casey, 74, pictured, calls his time zone Winter Adjustment for Retired People – or Warp. He says it helps him and his wife avoid busy times on the roads and at the shops, while ensuring that they a l ways get served promptly when they go out for meals.

They prefer living out of synch with the rest of the UK so much they are considering remaining an hour ahead when he clocks go forward.

Mr Casey had a ‘eureka’ moment last October. The couple spend part of the winter in Tenerife, which is an hour ahead, and hated going back to GMT when they returned to Heversham, Cumbria.

He said: ‘We have an extra hour of daylight in the evening, instead of first thing when we’re in bed. When we go to the supermarket in the morning it’s almost deserted.

‘When we go out for lunch, we get the best table and we get served first. There really are no down sides.’

Britain first put the clocks forward in summer 100 years ago to improve productivity in the First World War.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents wants the clocks to be put forward a further hour – BST in winter and ‘double BST’ in summer to cut road deaths and pollution.
